Protecting Your Eyes in the Winter

Protecting Your Eyes in the Winter

Here in Ontario, the winters can sure get cold. But while everyone seems to remember how important it is to wear layers, use caution while driving, and avoid walking on slippery ice, our Hamilton optometry team finds that many people forget their eyes need protection from the inclement weather, too.

Winter Weather Hazards & Eye Safety: Helpful Tips from Our Hamilton Optometrist

Dr. Suzanne McNeill has been a Hamilton optometrist for several years. In that time, she along with the rest of her staff has braved the winter weather! On behalf of Dr. McNeill, we'd like to share some helpful tips which can help keep your eyes healthy all winter long:

Keep wearing those sunglasses.

UV radiation from the sun isn't just a summertime concern. Our eyes can become damaged by excessive exposure to sunlight, and when the light bounces off snow and ice, the glare can intensify. So, always wear sunglasses offering broad-spectrum protection against UV-A and UV-B light while you're out romping and walking in the winter wonderland.

Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate.

The dry air of wintertime can dry out your skin and eyes. You can help minimize your risk of itchy, dry, and red eyes by drinking plenty of water.

Use caution when playing in the snow.

Throwing snowballs is fun, but just be conscious of where you aim. Ice, snow, and debris can easily cause damage to the eyes including corneal abrasions (scratches).

Wear protective gear for all winter-related sports.

Whether you're shooting pucks, slicing the slopes, or blazing your own path on snowshoes, you need to make sure that you're wearing protective goggles and face masks.

Schedule annual eye exams for you and your family.

Why not bring your family in for an annual eye examination before the end of the year? We can help the whole family make sure you have everything you need for healthy vision in 2018.
